Day 17: 17 days forward, 2 steps back...

17 days forward, 2 steps back!

The Vega did not love me as much as I would like to love it!. I got my right side pain reaction strong today, and I just wonder what?? what?? why??

So Vega is out. I am back to only juicing. I will be trying to juice more sprouts along with the veggies and  fruit. Sprouts contain ten to thirty times more concentrated nutrients than the most nutritious vegetables. They are a unique superfood with potent medicinal qualities and when juiced, their already concentrated nutrition becomes even more concentrated and potent!.

So friendly sprouts, here I come.

As I sat in meditation tonight, my only tool between the sensation of pain and myself was my breath. Interestingly enough, the more I concentrated on the breath, the more the sensation of pain disappeared.

As I sit here tonight, writing down my experience. The pain is back.

Tomorrow will be a better day.

Day 16: Compromise. I accept. I need my Umph back!.

Day 16!! Wao. Almost half way there.

For the most part of the Juice Feast I have really been feeling good. Juicing a lot, yes. I am a very active busy mama of 3 very active busy boys, so I need the nutrition and the high intake of juices to keep me going. Over the last two days though I started to not have as much stamina as I need to get through my days, and I have also lost quite a bit of weight for me. I am not worried about the weight as it will all come back as I reintegrate other foods into my diet. But I am concerned with not having enough energy and stamina to keep doing my daily do's. So I had to compromise. Honestly I was very stubborn about it. I didn't want to consume anything but fresh pressed juices, water, miso for the 40 days. But being snappy and very low in energy is not gonna allow for the healing I seek in this journey, neither for my family to put up with it!

So I have added a little bit of the Vega plant based protein powder to my day. One scoop in a 8 oz glass of water. I did it twice today and I have felt a big difference, let's just say I got my Umph! back. So I guess my husband was right.... I accept, I needed the Umph! assistance. I still don't like the fact that I have to do it, but I understand that I need it to be able to keep up. I think if I was away, in retreat at some Ashram or simply able to slow down my days, then perhaps I wouldn't need the extra Umph assistance.

Sitting in meditation gave the space to reflect upon what was happening as a witness and allowed me to let go of my attachment to carry through the 40 days the was I had intended, without taking into consideration the need that is present today. It also gave me the space to feel what I was feeling and then breathe through it, from that space I was able to act with gentleness towards myself.

I am glad I listened. It's good to have my Umph back! now let's continue the Juice Feast!.

Day 15: Rejuve- what??? Rejuvelac!!! get your probiotic naturally!

For the past few days I have making Rejuvelac!. Its not a complicated process, it just takes a little time but well worth it!. Get your probiotics naturally!!

Rejuvelac is the fermented water made from soaking sprouted wheat berries (alone or in combination with other berries, such as rye berries). It is extremely beneficial to the digestive system and intestinal tract as it contains eight of the B vitamins, vitamins E and K, and a variety of proteinsdextrinescarbohydratesphosphates and amylases. It is rich in enzymes that assist digestion and the growth of friendly bacteria, such as lactobacillus bifidus, which produces a lactic acid that helaps the colon maintain its natural environment. Lactobacillus bifidus also helps cleanse the lower intestinal tract. Once made it can be kept in the fridge for a month.

It is extremely important to include raw fermented foods in our diet. They are an important source of beneficial bacteria for the body. It is extremely important that they are RAW unpasteurized as the process of pasteurization kills all beneficial bacteria and enzymes, and then well, what's the point?. Many different cultures around the world eat fermented foods as part of their daily diets. Other fermented foods are: kimchi, sauerkraut, chicha, etc.

So how do you make Rejuvelac anyway:

1.- Day 1: Combine the wheat berries and rye berries in a 24- ounce jar with a vented lid (or use cheesecloth to cover the top). Add 3 cups of water. Out the jar in a warm spot and let sit at room temp.

2.- Day 2: Discard the liquid. Transfer the berries to a nut bag and put the bag in a bowl. (I hang mine.)

3.- Day 2 to 4: Rinse the berries under cooling running water 3 to 5 times a day. (I only do it morning and night for sure. If I remember to do it at other times I do it.)

4.- Day 5: When the berries have tiny tails, that means they have sprouted!!! Rinse the sprouted berries once more. Put the berries in a one- gallon glass jar with a lid. Fill the jar completely with spring (filtered) water and let sit overnight in a warm spot.

5.- Day 6: The sprouted berries will produce 1 gallon of fermented liquid called REJUVELAC!!. Strain  and discard the berries, but save the liquid!, which is the rejuvelac. The liquid will be pale yellow, and cloudy, and smell quite pungent. Refrigerate for up to 1 month. The same berries can be used up to 3 times.
This recipe has been taken from the book "Raw Food for Everyone" by Alissa Cohen.

Rejuvelac can be drank on its own, or used instead of water in a variety of recipes, such as grawnola, raw nut cheeses, and others!

Yum!

Day 14: 99% of all living creatures are smaller than the size of a bee!

I read that today, at the ROM, (Royal Ontario Museum), as we rediscovered dinosaurs bones with our kids, which by the way is an incredible display. To witness their size, power and diversity, certainly brings a different perspective about the power of life to create magnificent beings.

And then to read the phrase: 99% of all living things are smaller than the size of a bee!

What a contrast. I guess life happens in dualities. But it's made me think of all the things, that other 99% that happens, but I am not aware of it. The other 99% of any story.

Day 13: Spicy Gingers, Sexy Vegans, Manly Vegans! Can you believe?

It is all possible, truely. To achieve optimal health and be beautiful, be sexy and for those who would like to: be manly. Since when did eating a steak has anything to do with being beautiful, sexy or, manly anyway?. I missed that evolutionary step.

Yes, the news are true about the email circulating around ... Pamela Anderson is vegan, and Nigella Lawson is not and washes it all down with wine! good for them both to have found their own paths. But instead of looking out to who is doing or not doing what... how about some looking in?

Perhaps being vegan is not what you want to do right now, but perhaps that arthritis on the knee that keeps bothering you so much needs some attention.. and perhaps there is a link between what you put in your mouth and what your body does with it, and what if you could make it heal? and what if in the healing process you discovered wonderful new sources of energy, inspiration, and health far beyond anything you could have imagined? Possible.

In the meantime, for the one who needs her/ his steak. Be conscious of the food what you eat eats. Be conscious of what goes into the production of what you eat. My family is not all vegan, (not yet!!!!), but the animal protein the do have, and its getting to be less and less, is hormone/ antibiotic free, organic when possible.

Now that was a spicy ginger yesterday, wasn't it?

I want to say that I strive to buy a lot of organic produce and food for us, but it is not always realistic. But just like the beef with the beef, become informed of the available choices. There is produce that is more sprayed than others, there is produce that is grown locally and in sustainable ways that may not be organic, but its pretty good. Check out the Dirty Dozen Fruits and Vegetables.

Its not a black and white issue, there are choices to be made, and there are lots of wonderful options as well. Non organic fresh produce is far better then processed microwave Lean Cuisine! so don't let the organic price get to you.

The benefits of a plant based diet rich in fresh produce, far outweighs the fact that they may not be organic.

Now for those manly man out there.. what about checking some vegan athletes like Brendan BrazierTim VanOrdenRobert Cheekeand Koya Webb?

Day 12: Dear farmer, I am thankful for the time you take to grow my food, but what the hell is in it?

I strive to buy a lot of organic produce. I love going to farmer's markets in the summer and to local farms, buying everything so fresh you can still smell the morning dew on the produce! But now, middle of winter I depend on the health food store and supermarkets for most of it. As I walk the isles of the supermarket, I always shriek when I come to see my friend the Ginger.

Here is a photo of two gingers. One is organic, the other one is not.

Care to take a guess?

So, what is in our food anyway? When I buy ginger, I expect, just ginger, not a long list of pesticides and fungicides and god knows what else, that is making the food grow in ways nature didn't intend it to.

We live in a fast paced world, with processed foods taking a main roll in our diets. So never mind all those "extras" you were so lucky to get along with your fresh produce, now its all processed to the point of food being empty calories and a lot of health hazards. And we the consumer, just go along, uninformed, trusting it will be all good, but it is really not so rawlly good.

As a culture there is direct relationship between our food and the overall health of people in North America. It seems to me, the numbers of unwell people are on the way up, and its no synchronicity of life. It's time to take the fields back! demand organic and sustainable growing practises and move in to a more healthy future. Over the past number of years there has already been a big step in this direction. You can now buy organic food in most supermarkets, but the prices are still high. So speak out and get informed!

Day 11: Finding courage in the breath.

As I sat in meditation last night after gathering my thoughts for yesterday's post, I held in my heart the feelings of anger and frustration. I felt agitated. As I begun to focus on the breath, the tension in my heart began to disappear. As I focused on the breath, I began to loose the attachment to the emotions I was feeling, to the point that I forgot all about them. I began to be present with my breath. Simply present.

As I contemplate on yesterday's meditation, not being present is exactly what made the feelings of anger, frustration, being overwhelmed take over. Up until yesterday I hadn't thought much about how many days I have left on the Juice Feast or how I would do it. But last night I did, and uncertainty took over. It was good to witness that uncertainty and sit in meditation with it. It was good to not want to 'control' it, but rather focus on the breath and allow life's energy to guide the process.

Courage and bliss came to me in the form of a quiet sweet breath.

Day 10: Little Miss Peppercorn

Little Miss Peppercorn (a.k.a. my liver) and I had a little holiday today. Although we're always together it hardly gets a break to detox itself, sit in the sun, be pampered and have a nice glass of fresh juice!

The liver is always working to refine and detox everything we eat, breathe and absorb through our skin. It is the body's internal filtration system and chemical plant. It converts nutrients from the food we eat into energy to be used by the bones, muscles and immune system in your body.

As we juice, all our organs are actually on a little bit of a holiday, they are still doing what they normally do, but because digestion slows down (freeing up lots of energy!), and our consumption of food is the cleanest it can be, they get a chance to use the energy to rebuild and rejuvenate themselves as well as other parts of the body.

As part of any detox Juice Feast it is important to detox other organs as well, it is important to do Colonics (Colon Hydrotherapy) or Enemas, to aid in the flushing of toxins from the colon (large intestine), liver, and gallbladder. Colonic Hydrotherapy or irrigation is a gentle internal bath using warm, purified water that can help to eliminate waste matter, and toxic substances from the colon. As the colon heals and toxicity leaves the colon, other organs of elimination such as the liver, lungs, lymph, kidneys and skin begin to improve their functioning as well. The body needs a clean and healthy colon to assimilate nutrients and dispose of waste. The health of the body truly begins in the colon.

It is possible to flush liver stones when performing a colonic... it's time to let go of those Peppercorns!!!!

To find out more about Colonics check out Naturotherapies of York, there you will find all the answers that you seek and more!. For the month of February they will be having a special. It will only be $65 (including HST) per session. Contact Kim at 905-836-4372.

Miss or Mr. Peppercorn will thank you for it.

Mid Afternoon: cup of ginger tea.
Before dinner: coconut water
Dinner: Endive, radicchio, spinach, Chinese broccoli, celery, garlic, green apple. 20 oz.

p.s.  10 days have gone by in a flash... and just when I started to feel good about the fast, confident on my decision and on my decision of sharing it with all of you!, thinking it would be easy to finish... WHAM!!! did I mention before that the emotion of anger is linked to the liver? that when you detox things get stirred up and we get challenged.... just when I thought I had it all under control.... well there you go, that's life, I can only control my reaction to what happens and even then, it's important to let go of the emotions that get stored in our bodies... its important to feel them, but then its just as important to acknowledge and to let go of them. Every organ is paired with an emotion, and when a specific area of the body is being challenged it is important to take a look deep within into the emotional realm of things.

Challenging would be the world of the night. I am committed to doing the 40 days, but tonight I feel challenged, angry and overwhelmed.

As my husband says, the days come and go. I know the feelings I have now will go to.

Missing the blissing.

Day 9: Amazing Grace

Day 9: Amazing Grace

As the days pass little gifts of inspiration come to me from those I love.

Last night I sat in meditation with my three kids. We did it only for 4 minutes and it was beautiful to witness them consciously connecting with their breath and the sound of the singing bowl I was playing. My two year old son keeped opening his eyes and giving me the most beautiful smile with joy in his heart. Then they went on to do tree pose and share a turn each playing (or banging- yikes!) the meditation bowl.

It is the simplicity of those moments that make them so special, the space between us was filled with warmth, love, and peace. So simple, so profound.

This morning an email came to me as a source of inspiration. It's a video of Maia Helles,  a 95 year old Russian ballet dancer who lives in Fire Island, NY. She is completely independent, healthy and as fit as a forty year old!. The film was shot by Julia Warr.

Day 8: How many times have you been to the moon and back?

Yeap, you read that right. And yes I still have my feet on the ground.

I have been reading the book: Whole foods to Thrive, by Brendan Brazier. It is as much a recipe book as a tool for learning about the impact our food choices have on our health, the impact of the food industry on the sustainability of the earth, and a guide to understanding nutrient dense whole foods.

Would you believe, "7.5 times more greenhouse gas emissions are created in the production of food than by its delivery"?.

Would you believe, "Livestock production uses a staggering 70 percent of all arable land and 30 percent of the land surface of the planet?".

Would you believe, "If Canadians abstained from eating beef for one year, we'd save in emissions as much as if we'd chosen to not drive our cars a distance equal to 693,961 trips to the moon"?.

Now that's a lot of trips!.

We all know that our food production emits greenhouse gas, we all know that we as a species are polluting the earth at rates the earth can not sustain itself. But examples like these, really demonstrate the severity of the problem with great clarity and precision.

Check it out, I highly recommend it.
The recipes are wonderful as well.

Check out Brendan's website www.thrivein30.com for wonderful guidance and tools to achieve long term health through a plant based diet.

Day 7: Giving myself permission.

Its taken me a long time to give myself permission to commit to myself.  To commit to a daily practice no matter what, where, which, whom needs my attention or doing. I have been practicing yoga and meditation several times a week since 1999, but there is always something, someone, or some excuse not to do it everyday or to fall out of the routine of doing it.

It's been an interesting process to step away and commit, and let the world resolve itself in my absence. I am thankful for the space and support I am receiving and for the grounding openness in my heart I am able to give back.

Meditation has become quite popular in the recent years. We hear of the positive effects it has on the body and the mind. But what makes it so special?

Meditation allows us to connect to our breath, the source of our life. Meditation allows for our whole body give back to itself. In this fast paced moving world, we need to give ourselves permission and stop, to reconnect, to become aware of what is going on within us, in order to stay grounded and connected to our spouses, families, society and the earth. As we begin to find peace within, peace out in the world begins to express itself around us.

During meditation our brain waves slow down, allowing for the process of regeneration and rejuvenation to happen easily within our bodies. There are many ways to 'kneel down and kiss the ground'!

On the website for the 'Winter Feast for the Soul' you can find lots of information about different traditions and their ways to meditate, as well as a wonderful download called the Path to Peace.

If you are a beginner I recommend to step out and find a class, a teacher, or another meditator who can provide you with the tools you need to make your practice a success.

So give yourself permission to kiss the ground!

Day 6: AHHhhh! the footnote... how could I have forgotten!

Day 6: AHHhhh! the footnote... how could I have forgotten!

Footnote #1: Emotions might rise, emotions might get emotional....

Ahhhhh! and I forgot to read the footnote.

Great day. Tough night.

Friday nights are always a special night at my house. I make a special dinner, its family time. I found it really hard to create and cook for everyone tonight. I found it hard to witness my thoughts, my emotions and my lack of patience with everything and everyone... including the juicer that spat pineapple back at me and the lemons my husband forgot to buy for my juice!!!

Yes, I am human after all. And it's moon time. Oh!

Footnote #2: Danger: Detox and moon time don't mix well together.

Oh really? well what am I supposed to do with that?

Footnote #3: Become your own witness, be with it, release what you no longer need.

Day 5: Life has no absolutes, only what absolutely works for you!!

Day 5: Life has no absolutes, only what absolutely works for you!!

I have been thinking today about how we get so caught up with absolutes, instead of really finding out what absolutely works for us and making it happen.  We get caught up in the naming of things, in establishing such high expectations for ourselves that the journey gets lost and the destination becomes the means in itself.  I am a photographer, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a raw vegan food lover, a this and a that, on some days I am more than that, on some days I am less.  The journey of growth, of gaining awareness and raising our consciousness goes beyond all the names and categories that we can describe ourselves into.  I believe finding what absolutely works for us, taking responsibility of it, owning it, and being our best potential leads to personal and global change.

I'd like to share with you the story of Maickel Melamed.  He is my sister-in-law's brother, a motivational speaker, an inspiration, a movement gaining more and more momentum and power to instigate positive change in people.  He was born during a difficult and critical labour that caused full-body Hypotonia. His life expectancy was 7 days.  He is now 36 years old, and his will to live has overcome every obstacle that has come his way.  He continues now to set challenges for himself and a team of professionals with whom he trains and who support him to achieve those challenges.

He has climbed the tallest mountain in Venezuela, Pico Bolivar (5.007 above sea level), he has participated in 7 & 10 K marathons and in 2011 he finished the famous New York City Marathon in 15:22:03!

His message is to inspire people to reach their own potential, to connect with their own power to achieve what absolutely works for them!.  In his own words "Nothing is to great as to not try it".

(The linked site is in spanish, but there are many interviews and u tube videos of him in English. Check him out.)

So, what does absolutely work for you?

Day 4: Detox ain't lovely but sure is worth it!

Day 4: Detox ain't lovely but sure is worth it!

Yeap, the Detox signs are here, a little acne, a little this and that... a lot knowing that I am giving my internal organs a well worth vacation and they will be back better then ever right after the break!

As I Juice away my body is detoxing, it is getting rid of what it no longer needs. Juicing provides me with all the minerals, enzymes and dense nutrition that I need all in a glass or two. It allows my body to use the energy generally used in digestion, to repair, rebuild and rejuvenate itself!

I have received several emails asking me about the juices that I make. My juices are "green juices". The majority of the contents of the juice are green (any dark leafy greens, cucumber, celery, sprouts), providing lots of chlorophyl and oxygen to my body as keeping the juice alkaline, low in sugar (Candida is no longer an issue, but I rather keep the juices green), clearing up the body's toxicity and remineralizing from the inside out.

I also drink a lot of Wheatgrass. My goal is to do between 6-8 oz a day during the Feast. Wheatgrass is just so RAWlly good! The following facts are just why I love this type of grass so much:

  • 1 fl. oz. of wheatgrass juice is equivalent to 2½ pounds of the choicest vegetables
  • wheatgrass is mineral rich and contains 92 minerals needed by the body
  • it is a complete protein containing 20+ amino acids and has higher protein densities than any other food source
  • the magic is in the enzymes with more than 30 found in the juice
  • the juice is 70% chlorophyll and since the chlorophyll molecule is virtually identical to hemoglobin (red blood cells that carry oxygen), wheatgrass juice will oxygenate your body
  • an as of yet unidentified, tiny molecule is responsible for the positive effect

You can find these facts and more at www.dynamicgreens.com, a wonderful supplier of wheatgrass in Stouffville, ON. Their website is a wonderful resource, with great information about the potent powers of Wheatgrass.

I also use unpasteurized fermented Miso. It's still winter after all!  I find the warmth of the miso "tea" soothing. I use unpasteurized Miso because it is abundant in beneficial microorganisms and enzymes that aid digestion and food assimilation, as well, it protects the body against Heavy Metal Poisoning. It is a powerful antioxidant, protecting the cell's against free radicals, and it is effective in reducing chronic pain. Among other things... not bad at all!

Today I didn't juice at night as I find I get an energy boost from it and have been feeling as if a current of energy is running through my body at night... kinda makes it hard to sleep... we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Day 3: The journey is always about choice

The journey is always about choice. The choice to go along with it discovering yourself along the process or the choice to resist it, to fight it, to be stuck in cycles that repeat themselves until we have the awareness to move on, to choose different this time and trust, TRUST, that it will all be good. RAWlly good.

My healing journey began 15 years ago, 1997, when I graduated from the Photo Arts program at Ryerson University, in Toronto. I was burned out with Chronic Fatigue, IBS, Candida and a lack of understanding that the love I had for working in the darkroom had caused so much trouble within me. I began my tour of doctors, because back then Candida was not as well accepted as it is now, after much research and lack of medical support I turned to the natural world, I changed my diet to a whole unprocessed vegetarian diet and it did wonders for me, most things cleared away. I am not sure that it really was IBS or simply elevated food sensitivities that were causing very strong physical reactions. I wasn't a conscious vegetarian, and 8 years into it, I, whom as a child hardly ate meat, started craving barbecued meat out of all things!. I lived in the brazilian area in downtown toronto and I went with the cravings, again not realizing that there were nutritional deficiencies that were calling, yelling for my attention.

1999: Yoga came into my life.

2003: Birth of my first son. Beautiful pregnancy, fast and furious home birth attempt, my son got stuck in the birth canal and by the time we got to the hospital, here came C-Section #1. Lots of complications later, the symptomology came back and so did changes in my diet again. I did continue to eat animal protein, but started to feel the effects of the change of diet once more.

2005:  Birth of my second son, C-section #2 and a whole whack of chemicals! my body screemed for help! Exhaustion, increased food sensitivities, and the beginning of a very mysterious right side pain that no one understands but its my body's signal for not wanting specific foods. Change of diet again, started juicing often, had vegetarian and vegan periods. But I was exhausted and the right side pain, from my fingertips, to the right side of my head, to the right side of my body, got worse, constant, and unbearable.

After much testing and no answers I decided to stop relying on other people to heal me and provide the answers I was seeking. I needed to heal myself, to find out what and why things where happening, and what has unfolded is a journey, a journey back to myself, a journey that keeps changing as soon as I find that I have some firm ground to stand on.

2008: Dahnhak (Yoga) teacher's training. The more I trained, the more aware of my sensitivities I became.

2009: Birth of my third son, C-section #3 and the end of Life as I knew it.

I have been vegan for almost 4 years, Raw Vegan for 2 1/2. I resisted the change my body seeked for so long, until my bodily symptoms became too much to think I would have to live this way for the rest of my life. I began to pay attention to what was causing the pain, it became clear to me that part of the problem where more food sensitivities. I was already on a whole foods vegan diet, off wheat and all animal proteins, but it seemed obvious to me that my body was rapidly changing and my mind and the rest of me were challenging the change.

Since then its been a journey of many ups and downs, but I have discovered the wonderful world of Raw living foods and the many health benefits it brings forth. The world of optimal health as a possibility, not an abstract concept. The world of dense nutrition, enzymes, minerals, delicious foods that support me and raise me up, and wonderfully aware people who challenge themselves and the world as it is, knowing we have a deep responsability to make it better, to make it sustainable.

So here I am 2012, the year of transformation, embarking on another chapter of this journey.

40 days, my yoga mat, my juicer, the cosmos and me!

I have decided to do the 40 days Winter Feast for the Soul with a twist. The Winter Feast for the Soul consists of doing meditation or your spiritual practice for 40 minutes each day for 40 days. I have been thinking to do a long juice fast as well, and what better timing, I am also doing a Juice Feast for the 40 days, as well as reconnecting with my Asana practice (Yoga) everyday.

So it is for the next 40 days, my yoga mat, my juicer, the Cosmos and I are going on a Journey!

I started on the evening of January 15th, 2012.

Let the transformation begin!

Day 1: January 15th, 2012

For the first time in many years I feel I am up to the challenge, not so much challenged by the challenge if you know what I mean. I feel supported and carried, I don't feel that inner battle of doubt, fear and self-consciousness, all the if's and but's, all the chatter of just not being sure if I can do it or not.

I was listening to the radio as I folded laundry and they were talking about Resolutions, about the fact that if you announce it to the world at large, you may have a better chance of accomplishing your Resolution.

So here I am, the last person on earth I thought to have a Blog, creating one, to inspire and support myself through the next 40 days.

I started the meditation and yoga practice during the day. I started the Juice Feast at night with a delicious green juice I made out of cucumber, celery, mint, pineapple, wheatgrass (16OZ).

Feeling encouraged and determined to transform my self from the inside out!

Day 2: January 16th, 2012

The cosmos is already at play.... today is my Mother's Birthday! and the first full day of my Juice Feast. Interesting to think of my Mother, of my roots, of where I come from and where I am today, on this my first day of the Juice Feast. I am grateful for her love and support, for all my ancestors that came before my her that made this precious body and soul. I am grateful for the strength I feel surrounds me and for the synchronicity the cosmos brings forth.

Half hour later: Arugula, Green apple, pineapple, celery, cilantro, ginger, garlic. 16 oz.
